Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders officially announced the suspension of his 2020 campaign for president on Wednesday, a move many had expected as former Vice President Joe Biden’s lead in the delegate count continued to grow.

"I wish I could give you better news, but I think you know the truth. And that is that we are now some 300 delegates behind Vice President Biden, and the path toward victory is virtually impossible," Sanders told supporters via live stream on Wednesday.

Included in Sanders’ remarks Wednesday were promises to work with Biden to continue to move progressive ideas forward.

While his campaign is suspended, Sanders said he’ll remain on the ballot in the rest of the year’s primaries in order to garner more delegates for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in August. The more delegates a candidate brings, the more influence over the party’s platform and rules that the candidate has.
