On Thursday, Attorney General William Barr aimed at U.S. tech companies and Hollywood over their relationship with China, accusing them of “kowtowing” to the Chinese government for profit. While left-leaning articles highlight that Barr lambasted Silicon Valley companies, right-leaning articles highlight China’s history of using “unlawful tactics” to prey on American companies.

The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that Barr lambasted Silicon Valley companies, focusing on Apple and slamming it for removing Chinese users’ ability to access pro-democracy songs. Barr praised the recent decision by several tech giants to suspend providing user data to Chinese law enforcement in response to its crackdown on Hong Kong protesters.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that Barr directed his sharpest criticism to U.S. businesses that he says jettison American values to chase the Chinese market. Barr also targeted Hollywood and the actors, producers, and directors, whom he said, “pride themselves on celebrating freedom and the human spirit.”

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Barr said China “has systematically preyed on American companies,” utilizing a “wide array of predatory and often unlawful tactics.” Barr warned firms that appeasing the People’s Republic of China may bring short-term rewards, but not long-term ones.
