Thursday marked one year since the Jan 6 Capitol Insurrection. Biden delivered a 20-minute address at Statuary Hall and formally condemned Trump for his incendiary role and the rocky transfer of power. While left-leaning articles note that the speech finally addresses Democrat concerns over Biden’s passivity toward Trump, right-leaning articles report on Trump’s pushing back that the address merely distracts from Biden’s “incompetent job”–stating: “That’s what you get when you have a rigged election.”

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that Biden chose to address Trump head-on, settling a debate “within the Democratic Party about whether to take on Trump directly or whether doing so merely elevates his stature.” Top aides privately cheered the speech. The article goes on to recount the frustration many Democrats have felt in Biden’s passivity toward Trump in light of the challenges of the last election. Many saw this speech as a step in the right direction of the Biden administration condemning Trump for past actions.

An article from USA Today summarizes some of Biden’s most heated comments about Jan. 6. The article also includes the other presences shared at the remembrance: including the Cheneys. The article writes that the “somber remembrances… underscored the nation’s deep divisions over the attack.”

A right-leaning article by the New York Post highlights Trump’s response to Biden’s address: “‘Biden is working hard to try and deflect the incompetent job he is doing and has done, on the horrible Afghanistan withdrawal (surrender), the Borders, COVID, Inflation, loss of Energy Independence, and much more,” Trump said in an emailed statement from his Save America PAC. “Everything he touches turns to failure. That’s what you get when you have a rigged Election.”’
