Biden Cancels Student Loans
We ran the numbers: There are 4,408 news articles covering this topic. 49% (2,145) are left-leaning, 38% (1,691) are centrist, and 13% (572) are right-leaning.
President Joe Biden canceled up to $10,000 in student loans and $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients and also extended the federal student loan payment pause until the end of the year. While left-leaning articles focus on Biden and Democrats’ views of the policy, right-leaning articles focus on statements from GOP activists.
NPR published a centrist article reporting on how to qualify for the $10,000, borrowers must earn less than $125,000 a year. Miguel Cardona, the U.S. Secretary of Education, stated that “we're delivering targeted relief that will help ensure borrowers are not placed in a worse position financially because of the pandemic, and restore trust in a system that should be creating opportunity, not a debt trap."
A left-leaning article from The Washington Post highlights how the loan forgiveness plan could give Democrats a boost ahead of the midterms elections but also brings risks from critics who say the amount is either too high or too low. Biden, however, defended the policy and argued that it will deliver the largest benefit to those most in need. White House estimates show that nearly 90% of relief will go to individuals learning less than $75,000.
A right-leaning article from Fox News highlights how a federal budget group said Biden’s debt plan “would boost near-term inflation far more than the IRA will lower it.” The article also notes how strategists call the move “irresponsible” and a political ploy to “bolster the Democrats’ chances in November.”
