On Friday afternoon, former Vice President Joe Biden apologized for telling radio host Charlamagne Tha God that black voters torn between voting for him and President Trump “ain’t black.” While left-leaning articles highlight Biden’s history of walking back on remarks related to race, right-leaning articles condemn Biden’s comments.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that Biden’s words exposed wounds among Democrats that date back to 2016, when many leaders felt the party took black voters for granted. The article also notes that this isn’t the first time Biden has had to walk back a remark related to race, as last summer, after weeks of criticism, he apologized for warmly reminiscing about working relationships with segregationist senators.

A centrist article by NPR reports that Biden reportedly told black business leaders on a call Friday afternoon that he “shouldn’t have been such a wise guy.” Tim Scott, the single black Republican in the U.S. Senate, called Biden’s comments “the most arrogant and condescending thing I’ve heard in a very long time.”

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Trump senior adviser Katrina Pierson said in a statement that Biden “truly believes that he, a 77-year-old white man, should dictate how Black people should behave.” The article also notes that Charlamange tha God responded to Biden’s comment by saying that "it has nothing to do with Trump. It has to do with the fact that I want something for my community.”
