On Friday, President Biden signed an executive order setting up a bipartisan commission that will study U.S. Supreme Court reform. While left-leaning articles highlight that the commission fulfills Biden’s campaign promise, but is likely to disappoint liberals who are looking for quick action to blunt the court’s conservative majority, right-leaning articles highlight that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tore into Biden’s new commission, releasing a statement calling Biden’s commission a “direct assault on our nation’s independent judiciary.”

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that the commission fulfills Biden’s campaign promise but is likely to disappoint liberals who are looking for quick action to blunt the court’s conservative majority. The Commission comes on the heels of Justice Stephen G. Breyer’s remarks against court expansion this week.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that in a statement, the White House said that the Commission will examine the “genesis of the reform debate; the Court's role in the Constitutional system; the length of service and turnover of justices on the Court; the membership and size of the Court; and the Court's case selection, rules, and practices.” The commission will be co-chaired by former White House counsel Bob Bauer and former Deputy Assistant Attorney General Cristina Rodriguez..

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell tore into Biden’s new commission, releasing a statement calling Biden’s commission a “direct assault on our nation’s independent judiciary.” McConnell also said that “anyone who was surprised by the creation” of Biden’s court packing commission “simply hasn’t been paying attention.
