On Thursday, president-elect Joe Biden’s transition team announced that Representative Deb Haaland would be nominated to serve as his Secretary of the Interior, making her the first Native American tapped for a Cabinet position in American history. While left-leaning articles highlight that by choosing Haaland, Biden sent a clear message that officials leading the nation’s environmental problems will have a shared experience with Americans who have been disproportionality affected by toxic air, right-leaning articles highlight that if Haaland is confirmed, Democrats would begin the 117th Congress with the slimmest of House majorities.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that by choosing Haaland, Biden sent a clear message that top officials leading the nation’s environmental problems will have a shared experience with Americans who have been disproportionality affected by toxic air and polluted land. In addition to Haaland, Biden has turned to North Carolina environmental regulator Michael S. Regan to head the Environmental Protection Agency, making him the first Black man to do so.

The Hill published a centrist article reporting that progressives are praising Biden’s selection, as Democrats such as Representative Ilhan Omar, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Cori Bush tweeted to congratulate her. Haaland backs the Green New Deal and if confirmed, would oversee the country’s public lands, forests and parks.

A right-leaning article by The Daily Caller highlights that the department’s transformation will likely play a significant role towards Biden’s efforts to combat climate change. If Haaland is confirmed by the Senate, Democrats would begin the 117th Congress with the slimmest of House majorities.
