Bipartisan Compromise Would Protect Abortion Rights
We ran the numbers: There are 2,451 news articles covering this topic. 43% (1,059) are left-leaning, 40% (987) are centrist, and 17% (405) are right-leaning.
Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) wrote a bipartisan bill to restore abortion rights, protect contraception, and prohibit state regulations from preventing abortion access before fetal viability. The bill is not expected to pass. While left-leaning articles focus on Congressional actions to codify Roe after the Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, right-leaning articles focus on Biden’s response.
A left-leaning article from The Washington Post highlights how 17 states have outlawed or mostly banned abortion since the decision in Dobbs. The current bipartisan agreement comes after Senate Democrats failed to pass partisan legislation to codify Roe in May.
AP News published a centrist article reporting that the bill is a long-short effort to put Republicans on record for not supporting the decision. Senator Kaine stated that “we still think there is utility in showing there is a bipartisan majority that would want to codify Roe” even without enough votes for the bill.
A right-leaning article from Fox News highlights how the proposed bill came after President Biden urged Congress to codify Roe, stating that the filibuster “should not stand in the way.” The article also notes how Senator Murkowski said that “every American should have autonomy over their own health care decisions,” adding that the Supreme Court “made it imperative for Congress to restore women’s reproductive rights.”
