On Wednesday, U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rebuke of “dangerous” comments by U.S. Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer, who assailed Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch by saying they “won’t know what hit” them if they ruled in favor of abortion restrictions.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that the “war of words” between Schumer and Roberts shows how the relationship between the legislative and judicial branches have taken a turn for the worse. The article notes that balance of power relies upon the notion that the judiciary isn’t just an extension of the two political parties in Washington, but rather a separate entity.
Reuters published a centrist article highlighting that Trump also condemned Schumer in a tweet, stating that if a Republican did this, “he or she would be arrested, or impeached.” Schumer spokesman Justin Goodman noted in a statement that Roberts didn’t comment when Trump attacked Justices Sotomayor and Ginsburg last week, but followed the right wing’s “deliberate misinterpretation of what Sen. Schumer said.”
Fox News published a right-leaning article reporting that this is not the first time a Democratic senator has issued vague warnings toward the Supreme Court, citing that in August, a group of senators led by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse accused the court of being politicized and “not well.” The article notes that the dispute between Schumer and Roberts stems from an abortion case regarding restrictions over who can perform abortions, involving a Louisiana law similar to one in Texas that the court ruled unconstitutional in 2016.
