A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlighted China’s response to the sanctions on Chinese companies, calling them “illegal” and “outright bullying.” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning suggested that the U.S. has acted on a double standard by providing aid to Ukraine, prolonging the conflict. Ning said the effects of the sanctions were severely damaging to China’s interests and accused the U.S. of spreading false information to justify sanctions on Chinese companies connected to Russia’s Wagner Group.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlighted the U.S. sanctions on Chinese companies that are believed to have ties to Russia and human rights abuses in Ukraine and Africa. Ning claimed that the U.S., which continues to send financial support to Ukraine, was no different from China supporting Russia’s army. Ning stated that the sanctions have “no basis in international law” and are illegal. The article highlighted that the sanctions come at a time when U.S. officials worry that China will send “lethal aid” to Russia in its war against Ukraine.
