The House Judiciary Committee scheduled the next phase of President Trump’s impeachment inquiry for Wednesday. However, on Monday, Trump left Washington to attend the NATO summit in London.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that lawyers for President Trump said that they would not participate in the first public impeachment hearing on Wednesday. The article traces this refusal to send lawyers as part of a pattern of stonewalling by Trump, who has blocked witnesses and documents relevant to the inquiry.

NPR published a centrist article comparing President Clinton’s travels to Ireland and the Middle East during his impeachment inquiry in 1998 to Trump attending the NATO summit during his own hearing. The article makes the point that Clinton was unable to escape questions regarding his impeachment while abroad, stating that when Clinton was at a press conference in the Middle East, an Israeli journalist asked him about his intentions to resign. However, the article notes that Trump’s entire time in office has been clouded by investigations, meaning that even as the impeachment looms over his trip to London, it won’t be Trump’s first trip overseas overshadowed by bad headlines in the United States.

A right-leaning article by Fox News focuses on Trump’s angry remarks regarding the Democrats’ decision to launch the next phase of his impeachment inquiry while he was scheduled to be overseas. "So the Democrats, the radical left Democrats, the do-nothing Democrats decided when I’m going to NATO, which was set up a year ago, that when I’m going to NATO that was the exact time," Trump said. In a letter released on Sunday, White House counsel Pat Cipollone also accused House Judiciary Committee Chairman Representative Jerrold Nadler of purposefully timing Wednesday’s hearing during Trump’s trip.
