The first night of the Democratic National Convention will feature several Republican speakers, including former New Jersey Governor Christine Whitman and former Representative Susan Molinari (N.Y.). While left-leaning articles highlight that the lineup of speakers aims to showcase a broad spectrum of Biden backers, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump and his campaign continue to ridicule Biden for “staying in his basement.”

The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that the lineup of speakers for the Democratic National Convention aims to showcase a broad spectrum of Biden backers who are united by their opposition to President Trump. The article highlights that the most popular figure speaking will be Michelle Obama, but that state leaders such as Govs. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan are also essential voices to speak directly to the public health crisis that have put these governors on the front lines.

The Hill published a centrist article reporting that Republicans will appear on the first night of the convention to back Biden in his bid to push Trump out of office. While Whitman has long criticized Trump, former Ohio Governor John Kasich (R) has defended his decision, stating that he’s watched Trump serve as a “divider” in office for the last 3 ½ years.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Trump said Biden “does not come out of his basement” and that he “hasn’t taken on question” from reporters. For the past five months, Trump and his campaign have ridiculed Biden for “hiding in his basement” in Wilmington, Delaware.
