On Tuesday, House Democrats accused Attorney General William Barr of helping President Trump distract from the administration’s handling of the coronavirus response. While left-leaning articles highlight that Barr offered a combative defense during his testimony, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump’s campaign continues to attack Biden as being soft on crime.
A left-leaning article by Bloomberg highlights that Barr offered a combative defense of his independence from Donald Trump and the federal response to protests. The article also notes that Barr’s written statement didn’t address some of the most controversial decisions he’s taken in recent months including overruling his own prosecutors to reduce a recommended prison sentence for Trump ally Roger Stone.
The Hill published a centrist article reporting that while Representative Zoe Lofgren characterized Barr’s deployment of federal officers to cities like Portland, as “trying to create a scene,” chairman Jerry Nadler pressed Barr on whether he discussed the reelection campaign with the president. Barr responded that Trump has discussed the reelection race with his cabinet but declined to clarify if the use of department resources was a part of that.
Fox News published a left-leaning article highlighting that on Tuesday, Biden charged that President Trump is “determined to stoke division and chaos” in cities where protests are raging. At the same time, President Trump and his re-election campaign have attacked Biden as being soft on crime and accused him of wanting to defund the police.
