The appointment of a special master to examine thousands of documents seized during the search of former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago beach club last month will be challenged by the Justice Department. This decision effectively limits the criminal investigation into the Trump campaign's handling of classified government records.

USA Today published a centrist article about how Justice lawyers argue the investigation would be seriously impeded if a special master was to review personal items and documents "subject to claims of attorney-client and/or executive privilege". The judge also halted the government's investigation into possible obstruction of justice and violations of the Espionage Act.

A left-leaning article from CNN highlights that the government argued the order was putting US national security at risk. The Justice Department has requested that criminal investigators be allowed access to more than 100 classified documents found at President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence. Prosecutors asked Cannon to temporarily suspend parts of her order, citing executive privilege.

A right-leaning article from Fox News highlights how, after the Washington Post reported that the FBI raid was conducted in search of "nuclear" papers, an ex-CIA director suggested that former president Donald Trump be executed and that the FBI seized 40 years of Trump’s medical records as well as tax records from Mar-a-Lago during the search. By Friday, Trump's legal team and the DOJ have been ordered to submit suggestions for the special master.
