On Friday, America experienced the fallout of the historic indictment of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Left-leaning articles highlight that Trump has put a positive spin on his criminal charges by rallying supporters against a supposed “Witch Hunt” against him, while right-leaning articles highlight that Trump has incensed his supporters, who donated over $4 million to his campaign after the indictment was announced.

The Hill published a centrist article reporting that Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) called on Trump to “step aside” in the 2024 presidential election following his indictment on Thursday. Hutchinson, who is a potential candidate in 2024, said he does not agree with the indictment but that Trump would be a distraction. He spoke to Fox Business saying that when a public official is indicted, maintaining the stability of the office is more important than the individual themself.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlighted Trump's fervent denial of the criminal charges and his claims that the investigations were fueled by political motivations by President Joe Biden and the “Radical Left Democrats.” Despite being the first president in U.S. history to face criminal charges, the indictment may pose minimal harm or even further bolster his political popularity. An analysis by the Post shows that, even after the indictment, he will likely find support from groups of Republicans, Evangelicals, uneducated whites, and men.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlighted that the indictment, which would ordinarily spell death for a presidential hopeful, has only incensed Trump’s loyal supporters who donated over $4 million to his presidential campaign after the criminal charges came out. Fox highlighted that in the hours after the indictment was announced, Trump’s actual and potential rivals in the Republican presidential primaries voiced support, parroting the claims that the indictment was politically motivated.
