On Monday, House Democrats and President Trump’s defense team made their final arguments in the Senate impeachment trial before lawmakers vote later this week on whether or not to remove Trump from office. While left-leaning articles focus on skepticism over Trump’s ability to change his behavior after impeachment, right-leaning articles recap the final day of closing arguments.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights skepticism over Sen. Susan Collins’ comment that Trump will be “much more cautious” after the impeachment, even though he is almost certain to be acquitted. The article cites the fact that Trump’s July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky happened the day after former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III testified to Congress about foreign interference in the 2016 U.S. election. Another left-leaning article by NPR reports that as the impeachment trial’s closing arguments wrapped, at least one Democrat, namely Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, said he remained undecided on whether or not to vote to convict Trump. Trump’s defense team argued that Trump did not attempt to pressure Ukraine to investigate his political rivals by holding up military aid and quoted Martin Luther King while talking about freedom and justice.

A centrist article by Reuters reports that even as the impeachment trial ends with acquittal seemingly assured, Democrats continue to condemn Trump at the trial, calling him a man with no moral compass who must be removed from office. Meanwhile, Trump’s personal lawyer Jay Sekulow urged senators to “stand firm,” and accused Democrats of aiming to negate the 2016 election and subvert the will of the American people.

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that House manager Rep. Jason Crow, D-Colo., stated during his closing arguments that “duty demands that you convict President Trump.” Meanwhile, Trump’s attorney Kenneth Starr argued that the House’s impeachment power is not free of limitations. He also accused the House Judiciary Committee of rushing to move forward with impeachment, while contrasting Trump’s impeachment with that of President Bill Clinton and the effort to impeach President Richard Nixon.
