On Monday, vast crowds filled the streets of Tehran to pay respects to Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force, who was killed last week in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad. Left-leaning articles highlight the implications Soleimani’s killing has on the relationship between the United States and the Middle East, while right-leaning articles justify why Democrats and the liberal media are wrong for decrying Soleimani’s death.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times reports that Soleimani’s killing has prompted fears of escalating retaliatory actions between Iran and the United States. President Trump threatened to strike Iranian cultural sites, while two Iranian leaders who were once viewed as moderates, unleashed a fiery response to the United States in light of Soleimani’s killing.
NPR published a centrist article reporting that at Soleimani’s funeral, many black-clad mourners openly wept and beat their chests in a show of anguish, while some held white flowers or wore red headbands. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prayed over the caskets of Soleimani and others killed in a U.S. airstrike as they were leaving Baghdad International Airport in neighboring Iraq. In a eulogy, Soleimani’s daughter also appeared to threaten U.S. forces in the region.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights why the decision to kill Soleimani was not a bad thing. The article claims that the action not only showed the power and precision of America’s military and intelligence capabilities, but Soleimani’s demise has also likely sent Iran’s leaders into disarray and that the leaders of China, Russia and North Korea are taking note not to underestimate President Trump.
