On Tuesday, as the investigation into former President Donald Trump paying hush-money to adult-film star Stormy Daniels made headway, Manhattan’s district attorney and investigation lead Alvin Bragg responded to the GOP’s criticisms. Left-leaning articles highlight that GOP leaders criticized Bragg’s investigation but hesitated to outright defend Trump, while right-leaning articles highlight Bragg’s response to House Republicans’ demands that he release key documents and testify in Congress.
USA Today published a centrist article reporting that the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation may be coming to a head soon and Trump may be the first U.S. president in history to face a criminal charge. Trump is being investigated for an alleged $130,000 payment made to Daniels to conceal their 2006 affair ahead of the 2016 presidential elections. While Trump will likely not be arrested, an indictment by the Manhattan DA is forthcoming.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlighted that today is the day Trump claimed he would be arrested, for which he urged his supporters to protest. Trump was not arrested, but key GOP members were quick to criticize Bragg, the principal investigator, while hesitating to outright defend Trump. The critics, most notably Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), attacked Bragg for what they called a politically motivated indictment.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlighted that Bragg responded to House Republicans’ request that he testify in Congress on Trump’s possible indictment and hand over key documents relating to the investigation with a scathing statement. In it, Bragg’s office stated that it will be not intimidated by “attempts to undermine the justice process” in response to claims that the investigation and indictment were politically motivated.
