Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., says he has the votes to establish rules for president Trump’s impeachment trial with no support from Democrats. While left-leaning articles focus on the Democrats’ continued insistence for witnesses and a hold over the articles of impeachment, right-leaning articles highlight that Pelosi has to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate soon.

The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Democrats in a closed-door meeting on Tuesday that she will stand by her decision not to send articles of impeachment to the Senate until she learns more about how the chamber will conduct the trial. In a letter to Democratic lawmakers Tuesday night, Pelosi hinted that McConnell also needed to publicly release the legislation detailing parameters and procedures for the trial.

A centrist article by NPR reports that McConnell is modeling the rules of the impeachment trial on the 1999 trial of President Bill Clinton, in which senators voted unanimously to approve a basic outline of how the trial would be conducted, saving the question of witnesses and evidence for a second set of rules. However, Senate Democrats have refused to agree to that two-step process, insisting that they need to hear from the four witnesses who refused to testify before the House.

A right-leaning article by Fox News reports that former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle appeared on “Special Report,” predicting that Pelosi will send the articles of impeachment to the Senate “within the next week.” His Republican counterpart, former Senate Minority leader Trent Lott, also stated that the Constitution and the impeachment rules make it clear that she has to send the articles of impeachment “pretty quickly.”
