House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pitched an invocation of the 25th amendment to the constitution which indicates that a “16 member bipartisan commission made up of doctors and former administration officials” will make calls regarding the fitness of a current to execute his duties. There has been support for this on the left, however people on the right are outraged at the suggestion, saying that it intentionally targets Trump.
A left leaning article from Miami Herald says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi mentioned legislation that would give Congress the right to intervene under the 25th amendment to remove a president. She claimed that it was not related to Donald Trump, rather it pertains a need for “greater congressional oversight of his White House. Ever since Trump was diagnosed with Covid-19, Pelosi has fiercely questioned his mental fitness for the job considering his health issues. Pelosi has demanded more information about his health after his diagnosis, including when he (as well as other politicians) first contracted the virus. Many members of the Trump Administration have said that these requests are completely absurd and inappropriate. Pelosi said that now is a moment when we can use our constitution to guide us through adversity and moments of uncertainty.

She has said repeatedly that this is not an attack on Trump, rather, it was intended to “clarify the procedure for future presidents.” Former Constitutional Law professor, Rep. Jamie Raskin introduced similar legislation in 2017. Pelosi and Raskin have emphasized the urgency of this action considering the sheer number of government officials contracting the virus.
White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany went on USA Today Post to discuss President Trump’s health as well as Pelosi’s proposal to allow Congress to invoke the 25th amendment. McEnany said that it was an “absurd proposition” and that Pelosi might be projecting because she may have her own health issues. Trump tweeted that “crazy Nancy Pelosi is looking at the 25th amendment in order to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris. The Dems want that to happen fast because Sleepy Joe is out of it!!!”
