Politicians continue to react to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s announcement that he will step down as Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) in December. While left-leaning articles focus on Fauci’s statement in response to Republican vows to investigate him, right-leaning articles focus on statements from Republicans.
Newsweek published a centrist article reporting on how Dr. Jerome Adams, the surgeon general from 2017 to 2021 under former President Donald Trump, tweeted that it was “scary to see so many just truly hateful comments about Dr. Fauci in the wake of news of his retirement. Scary because what does the world look like when hard working, nation loving, and well-intended people say, 'nope—not gonna do public service.’”
A left-leaning article from ABC discusses how Fauci stated that he might testify if Republicans investigate him but would not submit to “character assassination.” Republicans plan to investigate Fauci and his role during the COVID pandemic if they win the 2022 upcoming midterm elections.
A right-leaning article from Fox News discusses how Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) argued that Fauci intellectually decided to leave after the November midterm elections. Paul believes that “it's no coincidence that he's decided to step down right after the election. I think he, like many people, perceive that the Republicans will take over at least one house of Congress and that there will be an investigation into his wrongdoing.”
