The House Select Committee investigating the January 6th attack on the Capitol held its final hearing of the summer on Thursday. While left-leaning articles focus on the committee’s potential impact on the Republican party, right-leaning articles focus on Senator Josh Hawley’s (R-MO) critiques of the committee.

A left-leaning article from The Washington Post highlights how the January 6th committee has tested Trump’s hold on the Republican party and the GOP’s wish to “forget about Jan. 6th.” While GOP views about Jan. 6th have barely budged, there is hope that the hearings will accelerate the party’s search for a new Republican standard bearer.

The Hill published a centrist article reporting on Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and her upcoming primary election. In the recent hearing on Thursday, Cheney stated that “there is no way to excuse [Trump’s] behavior. It was indefensible.” Cheney’s impeachment vote against Trump and role in the hearings has irked Republicans as she now lags 22 points behind Trump-endorsed challenger Harriet Hageman in an upcoming primary election.

A right-leaning article from Fox News highlights how Senator Hawley doesn’t “regret anything” about his actions on January 6th when he waved at a crowd of protesters entering the Capitol. Hawley called the committee a “clown car” and said, “I don’t regret anything on that day, I would do it again.” The article also notes how January 6th committee members argue that Trump is responsible for the Capitol riots, while Republicans charge that the committee is illegitimate.
