The Senate approved a bipartisan resolution to curb the president’s war powers in regards to Iran. The vote was 55-45 due to eight Republicans joining all Democrats to pass the measure.

A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that on Wednesday, Trump warned the Senate not to green-light the resolution, tweeting that “it is very important for our country’s security that the United States Senate not vote for the Iran War Powers Resolution.” Despite this push back, the Senate defeated the controversial amendment, which includes a provision stating that no part of the resolution “shall be construed to prevent the United States from defending itself from imminent attack.”

NPR published a centrist article reporting that Mike Lee of Utah, a Republican co-sponsor of the resolution, stated that the measure focuses on an imbalance of power given way to the presidency and that it's time for Congress to reclaim authority. The article also reports that Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine led the charge on the resolution and introduced the first version within hours of the Soleimani attack on Jan. 3.

A right-leaning article by New York Post highlights that the resolution has been slammed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and President Trump, and so is not likely to get enough Republican support to override an expected presidential veto. The article notes that fears that the country was on the brink of war with Iran added fuel to an ongoing effort by both parties to take back the power to declare war from the White House.
