On Tuesday, the Senate voted 84-15 to confirm Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo to lead the Commerce Department. While left-leaning articles highlight that Raimondo’s post will thrust her into some of the most contentious economic and security questions that confront the Biden administration, right-leaning articles highlight that although Raimondo is a venture capitalist, Rhode Island has continuously been ranked as one of the “worst states to do business” by CNBC’s annual list of ‘America’s Top States for Business.’

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that Raimondo’s post will thrust her into some of the most contentious economic and security questions that confront the Biden administration. During her confirmation hearing, Raimondo said she would prioritize efforts to revitalize U.S. manufacturing.

Axios published a centrist article reporting that Raimondo is a former chair of the Democratic Governor’s Association, as well as a Rhodes scholar. Republican objections to Raimondo’s nomination include her non-committal stance about keeping Huawei on the Commerce Department’s “entity list.”

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that although Raimondo is a venture capitalist, Rhode Island has continuously been ranked as one of the “worst states to do business” by CNBC’s annual list of ‘America’s Top States for Business.’ Senator Ted Cruz wrote on Twitter that Raimondo’s “refusal to commit to keeping Huawei on this list speaks volumes as to how she would act if confirmed as Commerce Secretary.”
