On Thursday, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduced emergency legislation in an attempt to stem the economic fallouts from the coronavirus pandemic. While left-leaning articles highlight President Trump’s contribution to the national debt, right-leaning articles highlight the benefits of the emergency legislation.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that Trump’s “corporatist” response to the coronavirus pandemic shows no concern for national debt, which has surged from $20 trillion to $23 trillion since President Trump took office. The article notes that Trump also signed the House-passed bill that would spend around $100 billion on paid leave and unemployment insurance.
Reuters published a centrist article reporting that McConnell’s $1 trillion-plus package includes direct financial help for Americans, relief for small businesses and their employees, as well as steps to stabilize the economy. In a joint statement, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the Republican bill puts corporations ahead of workers.
A right-leaning article by Fox News reports that the legislation could provide as much as $1,200 in direct payments per person, as determined by gross income thresholds based on taxpayers’ 2018 or 2019 tax returns. Furthermore, the article highlights that the bill would also provide $208 billion to loans and loan guarantees to distressed sectors of the economy.
