On Sunday, a group of prominent evangelicals wrote a letter to Christianity Today’s president, Timothy Dalrymple, in response to Christianity Today’s Editor-in-Chief Mark Galli’s op-ed earlier this week calling for President Donald Trump’s removal for office.

A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that Christianity Today says it has seen a boost in readership ever since the op-ed calling for Trump’s removal for office was published. Although the editorial did draw criticism from readers, other readers thanked Galli for writing the piece. In an interview on MSNBC, Galli said, "We rarely comment on politics unless the situation is grave and serious and might affect the welfare of the American people in some way.” The CNN article does not report on the letter from evangelicals to Christianity Today.

A centrist article by The Associated Press reports that the letter signals a lingering awareness by the president’s backers that any attempt to crack Trump’s longtime support from evangelical Christians could be perilous for his reelection hopes. Galli told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that although he views the chances of Trump leaving office as “fairly slim,” his editorial was a call for fellow evangelicals to re-examine their tolerance of Trump’s “moral character.”

Fox News published a right-leaning article reporting that in the letter, nearly 200 evangelical Christians condemned Galli’s editorial for dismissing evangelicals who oppose its views as “far-right.” “. . . we are Bible-believing Christians and patriotic Americans who are simply grateful that our president has sought our advice as his administration has advanced policies that protect the unborn, promote religious freedom . . .” the letter said. The article also notes that the editorial has faced severe rebuke from Trump supporters such as Jenna Ellis, a senior legal advisor for the Trump 2020 campaign, who slammed Christianity Today in an op-ed for the Washington Examiner.
