On Tuesday, Senator Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said in a local television interview that she is “disturbed” by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s plan to use “total coordination” with the White House on impeachment proceedings against President Trump.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times reports that Murkowski rarely speaks publicly against Republican leadership, so when she decides to, she sticks to her positions. The article reports that in the interview, Murkowski said that “we have to take that step back from being hand in glove with the defense.” However, she also criticized House Democrats for forging ahead with the impeachment so quickly without valuable testimony from top White House officials who refused to testify.

A centrist article by NPR reports that McConnell has increased his public appearances and in an interview on Fox News recently, touted his plans to work with the White House. He stated that there would be no chance Trump would be removed from the presidency in a Senate trial. In addition, McConnell said the impeachment case was “weak” and that there would be no difference “between the president's position and our position as to how to handle this."

Fox News published a right-leaning artilce highlighting that Murkowski wrongly used “Democratic talking points” when she criticized McConnell. The article notes comments made by Fox News contributor Jason Riley, who pointed to the fact that Murkowski was known for her “independent streak” as a more-moderate GOP senator, and that no House Republicans voted with Democrats to impeach Trump.
