There was bipartisan frustration with Representative Thomas Massie, R-Ky., ahead of the vote on a $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill, as he threatened to upend plans for a speedy voice vote on the bill by demanding an in-person roll call. While left-leaning articles highlight Massie’s declining reputation, right-leaning articles highlight reasons why Massie wanted to delay the legislation.
The New York Times published a left-leaning article reporting that Massie has never been one of the more liked members of the House, and on Friday, he brought together Democrats and Republicans around shared contempt for him. John Kerry, former secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee, tweeted that Massie “has tested positive for being an asshole.”
A centrist article by NPR reports that Massie used an 11-part tweet to explain his complaints against the legislation, which included how much it cost and the political process used to craft it. Trump weighed in on the matter on Twitter, calling for Massie to be ousted from the Republican Party.
Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that Massie wanted to ensure that there was a quorum, which would require half of the House members to show up on Capitol Hill. On Fox News’ “American Newsroom,” New York Democratic Representative Max Rose called Massie’s potential delay “disgusting.”
