In a statement on Tuesday, former President Trump blasted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling him an unfit leader of the Republican Party. While left-leaning articles highlight that Trump attacked McConnell because he was seeking to keep control of a divided Republican Party, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump, once an ally of McConnell, called him a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack.”

A left-leaning article by USA Today highlights that Trump attacked McConnell because he was seeking to keep control of a divided Republican Party. So far, Trump is winning the internal battle with Republicans who want him to go away, as a recent poll found that a majority of Republican voters said they would support Trump in a future election.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that Trump’s statement comes three days after McConnell voted to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial. McConnell also released a Wall Street Journal op-ed saying Trump “bears moral responsibility” for the insurrection.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Trump, once an ally of McConnell, called him a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack.” Trump also promised to back primary rivals against McConnell “where necessary and appropriate.”
