On Friday morning, the White House added a number of high-profile names to President Trump’s defense team, including Alan Dershowitz, Kenneth W. Starr, Jane Raskin, Robert Ray, and Pam Bondi. Left-leaning articles highlight why Trump needs additional members of his legal team, while right-leaning articles give a brief of the backgrounds of these new additions.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that word of the new additions to Trump’s legal team came as House impeachment managers and Trump’s attorneys “scrambled to produce legal briefs” ahead of the Senate’s return on Tuesday. The article also reports that new documents were released by House Democrats on Friday evening that indicate a third, unidentified individual was tracking the movements and activities of then- U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

A centrist article by NPR reports that Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz was somewhat controversial due to his involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein case, as well as being part of the O.J. Simpson defense team. Furthermore, Ken Starr was the independent counsel who made impeachment happen against President Clinton. Pam Bondi, who was already part of the president’s defense team, was the former attorney general of Florida who was brought to the White House to do media and public relations related to impeachment.

A right-leaning article by Fox News gives a brief of Trump’s defense team. The article reports that Pat Cipollone has played a key role in defending Trump during the House impeachment inquiry, while Jay Sekulow worked as the coordinator of Trump’s personal legal team and was heavily involved in his defense during former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Michael Purpura and Patrick Philbin will serve as deputies on Trump’s defense team.
