In a brief filed Monday the day before Trump’s second impeachment trial, lawyers for Trump are calling the House managers’ case for convicting the former president “political theater.” While left-leaning articles highlight that most Republican senators have signaled they won’t be voting to convict Trump, right-leaning articles highlight that former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker argued that Trump’s impeachment is “cheapening” the impeachment standard.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that while the impeachment charge is serious and circumstances unprecedented, there is little drama surrounding its outcome, as most Republican senators have signaled they won’t be voting to convict Trump. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer said the deal would “allow for the trial to achieve its purpose: truth and accountability.”
NPR published a centrist article reporting that Trump’s lawyers, Bruce Castor Jr., David Schoen and Michael van der Veen, allege that the Democratic-led effort to convict Trump is driven by “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The Senate is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, meaning House managers would need to persuade 17 GOP senators to vote to convict Trump.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that on Monday, former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker argued that Trump’s impeachment is “cheapening” the impeachment standard. Senator Chris Murphy, D-Conn., argued that Trump’s impeachment trial “doesn’t stop” the rest of the Senate’s business.
