On Wednesday, President Trump signed an executive order restricting certain categories of immigrants from entering the United States for 60 days. While left-leaning articles highlight the large number of immigrant visas that will be affected by this order, right-leaning articles highlight praise for Trump’s decision to put Americans first.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that the measure to restrict immigration also freezes the Diversity Visa Lottery, which issues about 50,000 green cards annually. More than half of the 462,000 immigrant visas the U.S. State Department issued last year went to applicants in categories that will be frozen by Trump’s decree.
A centrist article by AP News reports that partisans on both sides of the immigration battle accused Trump of being driven more by politics than policy as he tries to rally voters in an election year. David Bier, an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute, noted that although embassies and consulates are already closed for visa processing, Trump appears to be setting the stage for permanent reductions to legal immigration.
Fox News published a right-leaning article reporting that Jessica Vaughn, director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies, said that Trump’s move would “instantaneously create” new jobs for Americans and other legal workers. White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany also stated that “when Americans need jobs, Americans must come first.”
