As Covid-19 runs rampant in the halls of the White House, we are now seeing high ranking military personnel testing positive for the virus as well. Left leaning articles criticize the White House for not instituting and enforcing ample safety regulations to prevent the spread of Covid while right leaning sources continue to show sympathy for the president.

A left leaning article published by The New York Times highlights Washington D.C.’s failure to entirely adhere to Covid-19 safety precautions. Although the city has worked to enforce precautions in order to curb infection, the outbreak on Capitol Hill demonstrates that the city has very little true control over the federal government which operates within it. Senators have skirted regulations, leading to a mass spreading of the disease. D.C.’s mayor has called for more coordination between the city and the federal government which operates within the city, however these pleas were not met with compliance. Rather, Mitch McConnell has continuously disobeyed C.D.C. guidelines, declining to require masks, frequent same day testing, and recommending that people report to work rather than teleworking (as Speaker Nancy Pelosi recommended). The dichotomy between the city’s cautious measures and the Whitehouse’s lack thereof shows the true disconnect between the government and it’s host city.

A centrist article from USA Today reports that two top military officers, Gen. Mark Milley and Gen. John Hyten, along with a number of service chiefs from the Navy and Airforce are in quarantine after a meeting with Adm. Charles Ray (who tested positive for the virus), the No. 2 officer at the Coast Guard. Vice Commandant Ray tested positive and was at the Pentagon last week for meetings with other personnel and military leaders. Thus far, all individuals at the meetings have been quarantined and given Covid tests, however as of now, no one has tested positive. The article discusses how the military went through great pains to prevent the virus from penetrating its highest ranks as well as the Pentagon. We are now seeing that this virus has penetrated our military and government, showing that no one is fully protected or safe.

A right leaning article from Fox News reports that Trump surprisingly returned to the Whitehouse from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. After a few short days in the medical center after his Covid diagnosis, Trump was discharged from the hospital saying he felt better than he had in 20 years. His physician, Dr. Sean Conley announced that Trump reports no symptoms of the virus.
