On Wednesday, President Trump excoriated the Washington Post for publishing a report saying that he told aides to do whatever was necessary to complete the construction of his much-lauded border wall. According to the report, Trump promised that he would pardon those who broke the law in pursuit of this goal. Trump dismissed the report, which was based on comments from White House officials, as a “totally Fake story.”

A left-leaning article from the Washington Post (a follow-up article on Trump’s reaction that is separate from the report itself) focuses on the reactions of congressional Democrats to the report. Several Democrats said that Trump’s comments should be investigated. The article also notes that Trump has issued several pardons during the course of his presidency, saying “Several of the 15 pardons that Trump has issued during his presidency — a power that is nearly unchecked and that Trump has relished — have carried with them an overtly political tone.”

Centrist coverage from The Hill reiterates the report that Trump had promised pardons to those who were willing to violate the law in order to construct the border wall. The article also notes that candidates Beto O’Rourke and Kamala Harris used the report to deride Trump for acting as though he is above the law.

A right-leaning article from the Daily Caller emphasizes Trump’s denial of the claims made in the report. The article also notes that several congressional Democrats have repeatedly sued the Trump administration in order to stop or slow construction on the wall. “Funding from Congressional Democrats,” the article writes, “along with private property owners near the border, have also served as a major roadblock.”
