Republican congressmen said they believed China should be held accountable for its efforts to suppress reports of the coronavirus in December last year. While left-leaning articles highlight that the government is looking into the possibility that the coronavirus started in a Chinese lab, right-leaning articles highlight that the coronavirus was part of China’s effort to compete with the U.S.

A left-leaning article by CNN highlights that U.S. intelligence and national security officials say that the government is looking into the possibility that the coronavirus spread from a Chinese laboratory, rather than a market. However, the lab theory has been denied by the Chinese government and many outside experts.

Newsweek published a centrist article reporting that Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) told Newsweek in an emailed statement that “Beijing is exploiting the crisis for geopolitical gain and to spread misinformation that only further endangers public health.” The article notes that The Associated Press also reported on Wednesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and senior officials delayed telling the public that the novel coronavirus spread was likely to become a pandemic.

Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that sources believe coronavirus originated in a Wuhan lab as part of China’s effort to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States. This “increasing confidence” comes from classified and open-source documents and evidence.
