With Trump’s Covid diagnosis, The Debate Commission has decided that it may be safer and more intelligent to host the debate on a virtual format. Trump has refused to participate in a virtual style debate and has said that he may host in person campaign events instead. Biden has decided to host an event of his own as well, but using a virtual platform.
A left leaning article published by Bloomberg News discusses the upcoming Presidential Debate. Trump has said that he is feeling entirely healthy and plans to have in person rallies and interviews in the next few days. When Trump found out that the debate would be held remotely, he declared that he would not participate.
A centrist article from Reuters also discusses Trump’s refusal to participate in a virtual debate. He pulled out of the upcoming debate on October 15th after it was converted to a virtual event. Trump said that he may hold an in person rally in Florida on Saturday. He says that he would not waste his time on a virtual debate because “thats not what debating is all about.” While Trump will hold a rally, Biden has decided to host a town hall style event in Philadelphia the night of the intended debate. The chairman of the debate commission, Frank Fahrenkopf said that the decision to use a virtual format would not be reconsidered.
A right leaning article from Fox News looks at previous town hall style events and considers the fairness of the event structure. The article outlined a previous town hall event hosted by various news sources and pointed to the ways in which this forum is not conducive to a productive and fair debate. Many have said that the moderators and mainstream media sources have favored Biden, and fear that they will do the same in a virtual debate and Trump will not be able to express his ideas fairly and freely.
