On Tuesday, Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said he will support moving forward with President Trump’s upcoming election year nomination to the Supreme Court. While left-leaning articles highlight that Romney’s announcement could change American democracy by increasing the power of the Presidency and the wealthy, right-leaning articles highlight that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer slammed Mitch McConnell, saying that the majority leader has “defiled” the Senate over Supreme Court vacancies.

A left-leaning article by The New Yorker highlights that Senator Mitt Romney’s announcement that he supports moving forward with the confirmation of a new Supreme Court Justice marks a triumph for the Federalist Society, a conservative and libertarian legal group that has worked since the nineteen-eighties to recruit ultra-conservative lawyers to serve as judges. This change in American democracy is under way, and could increase the power of the Presidency, corporations, and the wealthy.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that Romney said he intends to “follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the President’s nominee.” However, Romney told reporters he wasn’t “going to get into the particulars” of whether he would support voting for Trump’s nominee if Democratic nominee Joe Biden defeats Trump in the election.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer slammed Mitch McConnell, saying that the majority leader has “defiled” the Senate over Supreme Court vacancies. Schumer said that if Leader McConnell presses forward, the Republican majority will have “stolen two Supreme Court seats four years apart, using completely contradictory rash analysis.”
