On Friday, President Biden spoke from the White House to a virtual crowd at the Munich Security Conference, seeking to turn a page on former President Donald Trump’s “America First” ethos, and instead declaring “America is back.” While left-leaning articles highlight that Biden ticked through a daunting to-do list, right-leaning articles highlight that Biden spent most of his speech on big-picture themes, including that the U.S. and its democratic allies are in a generation-defining fight with China.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that Biden ticked through a daunting to-do list, which included salvaging the Iran nuclear deal and meeting the economic and security challenges posed by China and Russia. The president also participated in a virtual meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized nations.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that this was Biden’s first speech since taking office that was aimed at an international audience. Although Biden didn’t mention Trump by name, he alluded to his fights with NATO allies.

A right-leaning article by The Washington Times highlights that Biden spent most of his speech on big-picture themes, including that the U.S. and its democratic allies are in a generation-defining fight with China. Biden said that the United States cannot shy away from competition with China, even as China expands its military footprint in the Pacific.
