Congressional Democrats unveiled a Biden-backed immigration bill called the Citizenship Act of 2021 that includes setting up a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. While left-leaning articles highlight that Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), who is the son of Cuban immigrants encouraged Democrats to take a “big bold” approach to immigration, right-leaning articles highlight that the bill would also see illegal immigrant farmworkers, Temporary Protected Status recipients and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients immediately eligible for green cards.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that Senator Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), who is the son of Cuban immigrants and the bill’s sponsor, encouraged Democrats to take a “big bold” approach to immigration. The 353-page bill is going to be the first major immigration overhaul since Republican President Ronald Reagan signed amnesty legislation in 1986 that legalized almost 3 million people.

NPR published a centrist article reporting that the measure closely aligns with the plan Biden proposed on his first day in office. However, it is anticipated that Republicans will oppose many provisions in the legislation.

A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that in addition to the eight-year path to citizenship, the bill would also see illegal immigrant farmworkers, Temporary Protected Status recipients and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipients immediately eligible for green cards. Separately, the bill also includes $4 billion in funding to target what the administration describes as “root causes” for migration from the south of the border.
