In a speech Tuesday afternoon, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden outlined a proposal that would cost $775 billion over 10 years to expand access for and lower the cost of caregiving. While left-leaning articles highlight that Biden cast his plan as a lifeline to middle class families, right-leaning articles highlight that Democrats are pushing a “fantasy” solution to the coronavirus crisis.
The Washington Post published a left-leaning article highlighting that Biden cast his plan as a lifeline to middle class families, stating that even before the pandemic they were feeling squeezed by the need to provide care for their children. Biden estimated that his proposal would lead to 5 million additional jobs, which includes caregiving positions and jobs Americans can pursue once they are free from caring for children.
NPR published a centrist article reporting that the proposal would emphasize tax credits to make childcare more affordable by making prekindergarten for 3- and 4-year-olds universal. Trump’s campaign said that Biden’s “unaffordable left-wing agenda gets more expensive by the day.”
Fox News published a right-leaning article highlighting that many Democrats are pushing a “fantasy” solution to the coronavirus crisis, which includes lockdowns that will continue to depress the economy. Fox News’ Laura Ingraham stated that Trump’s approach has been wise, because he wouldn’t mandate a lockdown of 330 million Americans and lose the entire U.S. economy.
