On Tuesday night, the first presidential debate between Joe Biden and President Donald Trump quickly spun into a storm of personal attacks. While left-leaning articles highlight that Trump’s bulldozer-style tactics represent significant risk for him, right-leaning articles highlight that Trump did not follow the debate rules.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that the president’s bulldozer-style tactics represented a significant risk for an incumbent who’s trailing Biden because voters are so fatigued by his near-daily attacks and outbursts. Trump declined to condemn white supremacy and right-wing extremist groups when prompted by moderator Chris Wallace and Biden.
USA Today published a centrist article reporting that the debate between Biden and Trump developed into a shouting match at times that made it hard for Wallace to be heard. Biden called Trump a “fool,” while Trump needled his opponent from the outset, calling him a “socialist.”
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Wallace scolded Trump repeatedly for not following the debate rules, and Biden did not fall into previous debate pitfalls. Trump hit Biden for his 47-year record in Washington and accused Biden of trying to get rid of private health insurance.
