On Monday, president-elect Joe Biden announced a number of key Cabinet appointments, including Antony Blinken as secretary of state and Alejandro Mayorkas to head the Department of Homeland Security. While left-leaning articles highlight that Biden has pledged to reverse many of Trump’s executive actions on immigration, right-leaning articles highlight that Blinken has held senior foreign policy positions in two administrations over three decades.
A left-leaning article by The Washington Post highlights that Biden has pledged to reverse many of Trump’s executive actions on immigration and Mayorkas’ nomination signaled that Biden is looking for someone experienced in both immigration policy and politics. Tom Ridge, who served as the first Secretary of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush said Mayorkas was “an exceptionally fine choice.”
NPR published a centrist article reporting that Mayorkas would be the first Latino and first immigrant to hold the job, as he previously was the head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Mayorkas was born in Havana and his family fled as political refugees to Miami.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Biden announced Antony Blinken as secretary of state, Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of homeland security, and Avril Haines to serve as the first woman to lead the intelligence community. Blinken has held senior foreign policy positions in two administrations over three decades and has advised Biden on foreign policy since 2002.
