On Wednesday, Virginia Sen. Mark Warner called for Attorney General William Barr’s resignation on Wednesday after the attorney general reportedly ordered peaceful protesters to be cleared from near the White House earlier this week. While left-leaning articles highlight Warner’s call for Barr to resign, while right-leaning articles highlight that President Trump lashed out at former Defense Secretary James Mattis.
CNN published a right-leaning article reporting that in a campaign email with the subject line “Barr Should Resign,” Warner cited Barr’s use of police tactics to clear out protestors, in addition to the Justice Department’s decision to drop the criminal case against former national security advisor Michael Flynn. Warner has also called for Barr to resign in the past and opposed Barr's nomination for attorney general in 2018.
A centrist article by The Hill highlights that more than 80 House Democrats on Thursday called for the Justice Department to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Barr’s reported suppression of a peaceful protest outside the White House. Representative David Cicilline wrote a letter to Attorney General Barr stating, “We could not understand why aggressive tactics were used.”
New York Post published a right-leaning article highlighting that President Trump lashed out at former Defense Secretary James Mattis for a second night and blasted former Chief of Staff John Kelly for coming to Mattis’ defense. Trump also wrote that he had the “honor” of firing Mattis after the general blasted the president in an op-ed published in The Atlantic.
