On Friday, President Trump announced new federal guidelines recommending that Americans wear face masks when in public to help fight the spread of the coronavirus. While left-leaning articles highlight Trump’s refusal to wear masks himself, right-leaning articles highlight changing guidelines regarding measures to protect against COVID-19.

The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that Trump undercut the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s urge for all Americans to wear a mask when they leave their homes by repeatedly calling the recommendation voluntary and stating that he wouldn’t wear a mask himself. Trump also dismissed the recommendation of Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who gave a national stay-at-home order.

A centrist article by The Associated Press reports that Trump and other administration officials stressed that the recommendations did not amount to requirements and that a variety of homemade coverings were acceptable. First lady Melania Trump sent a tweet endorsing the new guidance to wear face masks, even though her husband chose to disregard it.

Fox News published a right-leaning article reporting that the recommendation to wear face masks is being made because of studies that indicate asymptomatic people are spreading the virus. Trump also announced that the federal government will reimburse hospitals for treating people who don’t have insurance if they become sick from the coronavirus.
