The Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly had harsh words for Capt. Brett Crozier, former commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, who was recently reassigned for writing a memo complaining about the Navy’s reaction to the coronavirus outbreak aboard his ship. While left-leaning articles highlight that President Donald Trump suggested he might be able to resolve the situation, right-leaning articles highlight calls for Modly’s firing.

The New York Times published a left-leaning article highlighting that President Trump suggested that he might be able to resolve the situation between Crozier and Modly. Crozier’s crew members hailed Crozier as a hero who defended his crew at great cost to his career, while Modly and Trump have both been criticized for the decision to relieve Crozier of command.

A centrist article by NPR highlights that in a copy of the leaked audio of Modly addressing Crozier’s crew, Modly said that he and navy leaders were working to help Capt. Crozier deal with the virus before the letter was written. The article also notes that Crozier was popular with the crew and that reportedly, Pentagon and Navy officers did not want Crozier relieved from command.

The Daily Caller published a right-leaning article highlighting that Democratic Virginia Representative Elaine Luria called for Modly’s firing Monday, stating that his remarks to Crozier’s crew show that he is in no way fit to lead the Navy through this time. An audio of part of Modly’s speech indicated that his speech was not well received.
