On Monday, the House Judiciary Committee continued to hold impeachment hearings into Trump’s presidency. While left-leaning articles report the opposing claims from Democrats and Republicans, right-leaning articles state the numerous problems with the impeachment process.

A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights that during the impeachment hearing, Democrats and Republicans agreed that there are four facts at the heart of the debate about whether President Trump should be impeached. During the haring, Daniel S. Goldman, the chief investigator of the House Intelligence Committee, claimed that “everyone was in the loop” regarding Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, Trump “directed a scheme to pressure Ukraine into opening two investigations,” Trump used his office to withhold “an Oval Office meeting and $391 million in security assistance to pressure Ukraine,” and “despite the public discovery of this scheme, which prompted the president to release the aid, he has not given up.” Meanwhile, Representative Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio, asserted that Trump’s July 25 phone call with the president of Ukraine did not show evidence of pressure or a quid pro quo, the president of Ukraine has repeatedly denied feeling pressured, Ukraine did not know the security aid was held up, and the aid was eventually released without any announcement of an investigation that Mr. Trump wanted.

A centrist article by NPR reports that Goldman presented the Democrats’ case in the Judiciary Committee hearing on Monday, while Republican ranking member Doug Collins of Georgia argued that Democrats are pursuing impeachment because of a “personal vendetta.” The article reports that during the hearing, President Trump asked his Twitter followers to read the transcript of his July 25th phone call with the Ukrainian President. The interpretation of this call is the key to whether the president’s actions are impeachable.

The New York Post wrote a right-leaning article stating that there are numerous problems with the impeachment process, including the fact that Democrats have been rushing congressional proceedings, and that have had trouble identifying a crime, which is why they have “settled on the vague abuse of power standard that would make every future president impeachable.” The article also reports that Democrats regard impeachable “interference” as any effort to investigate known or suspected misconduct.
