On Tuesday, U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter of California pleaded guilty to the charge brought against him last year, that he illegally using campaign money for personal expenses. On Friday, his consequences were determined.

A left-leaning article by CNN reports that in a letter on Thursday, The House Ethics Committee urged Hunter to stop voting on legislation and other matters on the House floor, bringing into effect a House rule stating that members convicted of certain crimes should abstain from voting. Following the brief hearing on Tuesday, Hunter told reporters that he “made mistakes and that’s what today was all about.”

A centrist article by NPR highlights that Hunter announced on Friday that he will resign from his congressional seat. The article states that before the indictment last year on charges that he and his wife, Margaret, used campaign funds for personal use, he was once a powerful Republican member of the House Armed Services Committee. Over the summer, Margaret Hunter agreed to a plea deal that required her to testify against her husband.

A right-leaning article by TheNew York Post reports that Hunter is scheduled to be sentenced in March with a charge that carries up to a five-year sentence. The article reports that it’s not clear if a special election will be held to fill Hunter’s seat, and that his departure marks the fourth House Republican this year to resign and leave Congress before their term expires.
