On Tuesday, House Democrats unveiled the two articles of impeachment against President Trump. The first charge is Trump’s abuse of power in the Ukraine affair and the second charge is his obstruction of Congress.

A left-leaning article by The Washington Post breaks down the two articles of impeachment against Trump. The article states that Trump used his presidential power to leverage the State Department and the White House budget office to pressure Ukraine to take part in political investigations into former vice president Joe Biden. The abuse of power was an article of impeachment written against Presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton, two modern-day presidents who were either under threat of impeachment or actually impeached. The article states that Trump also blocked Congress’s investigation into his alleged wrongdoing by banning key witnesses from testifying in his impeachment inquiry. The obstruction of Congress was also faced by both Nixon and Clinton.

A centrist article by NPR reports that the articles of impeachment appeared 77 days after the House launched a formal inquiry into Trump’s dealings with Ukraine, marking the fourth time in U.S. history that articles of impeachment have been introduced against a president. The article states that in announcing the articles, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said that Trump’s actions have imperiled the integrity of the 2020 election, and in order to ensure that the election can run fairly, the House must impeach Trump.

A right-leaning article by Fox Newshighlights that the White House accused Democrats of using the Ukraine issue as an excuse for “this partisan, gratuitous, and pathetic attempt to overthrow the Trump Administration and the results of the 2016 election.” Trump fired back against the articles of impeachment by tweeting “WITCH HUNT!” White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham also slammed the announcement as part of the Democrats’ bid to “overturn the votes” of Americans who supported Trump in 2016.
