The New York Times released a report Sunday evening that in a forthcoming book, former national security adviser John Bolton wrote that the president told him in August that he wanted to withhold almost $400 million in military assistance to Ukraine until the government agreed to launch investigations of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. While left-leaning articles focus on calling Bolton as a witness in the impeachment inquiry, right-leaning articles highlights Trump’s rebuttal to Bolton’s claims.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times highlights the mechanisms needed to subpoena Bolton. The clearest way to do so is through a 51-vote majority in the Senate. If the Senate splits 50-50, in theory, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. could decide. However, it remains unclear if Roberts can decide on his own, without any vote.
A centrist article by NPR reports that the Times report cited accounts from multiple anonymous sources who said they saw drafts of the manuscript from Bolton’s book about his time in the White House. The Democratic House impeachment managers argue that the story strengthens their argument to have the Senate call Bolton as a witness at the impeachment trial.
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that Trump fired back on Twitter on Sunday to refute Bolton’s claims, stating that he “NEVER told John Bolton that the aid to Ukraine was tied to investigations into Democrats, including the Bidens.” The article also reports that other conservatives suggested that Bolton’s team leaked the information themselves and are using the media to increase book sales.
