On Friday, President Trump delivered an address at the March for Life. His address marked the first time a sitting president delivered an address for the march in person.
A left-leaning article by The New York Times reports that unlike President Trump, past Republican presidents who opposed abortion sent video messages or assigned a surrogate to speak for them at the march. Alexis McGill Johnson, the acting president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, pushed back on Trump’s actions and said that, “While Trump stands with the small number of Americans who want politicians to interfere with their personal health decisions, we’ll be standing with the nearly 80 percent of Americans who support abortion access.”
NPR published a centrist article noting that Trump’s appearance before thousands of mostly supportive anti-abortion rights activists comes during the impeachment trial and just months to go before the 2020 election, as he leans into his connection to religious and social conservatives. The article also reports that in an interview with NPR ahead of the march, the group’s president, Majorie Dennenfelser, called Trump’s appearance “a moment of celebration for the pro-life movement.”
A right-leaning article by Fox News highlights that at the March for Life, president Trump panned Democrats’ stances on abortion as “extreme.” The article also notes that while many Democrats have embraced permissive stances on abortion, there are still pro-life Democrats.
